The therapeutic diet for a bariatric patient is mainly adapted to lose weight, reduce the size of the stomach and maximize the absorption of nutrients. Here are the stages of a medically accepted diet after bariatric surgery:
1. Liquid phase (0-3 days)
• Only transparent liquids: water, sugar-free compotes, non-carbonated broths.
• Avoid sugary, carbonated, and caffeinated beverages.
2. Liquid nutrition phase (3-14 days)
• Liquids rich in carbohydrates and proteins: sugar-free smoothies, protein drinks, yoghurts, sugar-free puddings.
• Ingestion in small portions, often.
3. The soft nutrition phase (2-6 weeks)
• Soft and easily digestible food crushed in a blender: boiled vegetables, fish, turkey, dishes similar to mashed potatoes.
• Protein is the main one: 60-80 grams per day.
4. Regular but limited meals (after 6 weeks)
• Return to regular meals, but in small portions.
Avoid fatty, high-calorie, sugary, and heavy foods.
• Be careful when taking dietary supplements (B12, iron, calcium, vitamin D, etc.).
